316L Stainless Steel Resistance Wire
316L Stainless Steel (low-carbon austenitic stainless steel with molybdenum) is a premium, corrosion-resistant alloy widely trusted for applications requiring excellent durability in harsh, moist, or chemically aggressive environments. With a melting point of 1400°C (2550°F) and a maximum continuous operating temperature of 925°C (1700°F) (good oxidation resistance in intermittent service up to 870°C / 1600°F), it performs reliably where corrosion protection and longevity are priorities over extreme high-heat demands.
Standout features include:
- Superior general corrosion resistance and exceptional pitting/crevice corrosion resistance in chloride-containing environments—thanks to the addition of molybdenum (typically 2-3%)—making it far more robust than standard grades like 304 or 302.
- Low carbon content (L designation) for outstanding resistance to intergranular corrosion, even after welding or exposure to sensitizing temperatures—ideal for fabricated or annealed components without compromising performance.
- Excellent oxidation resistance with a stable, protective chromium oxide layer that withstands thermal cycling and reduces scaling in oxidizing atmospheres.
- Good mechanical strength and ductility at elevated temperatures, with minimal distortion or sagging in formed elements, plus high weldability and formability for precise designs.
- Non-magnetic in the annealed condition and maintains properties in a wide range of temperatures, including cryogenic to moderately high heat.
Perfect for applications such as marine equipment, chemical processing, food/pharmaceutical machinery, hot wire cutters in corrosive settings, medical devices, precision springs, and other environments where moisture, salts, acids, or chlorides demand superior corrosion protection alongside reliable heating or resistance performance.
